Beautiful Black Hills, South Dakota

Gari & I have started to scratch the surface of the places to go and things to see in the Black Hills area.  We started with the Mt. Rushmore National Monument and continued with the various lakes and wildlife areas in Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest areas.  The rolling and rugged rocky landscape is quite a profound change from what we are accustomed with back on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland.  We find the scenery to be beautiful.  The pictures don't seem to capture the complete majesty of the actual landscape, and after a while of looking at all the beauty our senses seem to go numb... see what you think.

We are one with South Dakota!

We completed a major milestone for this year; we made it to Rapid City, South Dakota and changed our residence by returning our Maryland vehicle license plates and driver's license and replacing those with South Dakota models.  That action affected all of our accounts from health insurance to cellular services, so we have been busy updating our address with every account we can think of.

Our first night in Rapid City was spent at the back of the Flying J Truck Stop parking lot.  It is a large truck stop so we were able to get away from the hustle and bustle and actually get a good nights rest.  The rest of the week we spent at Americas Mailbox, our mail forwarding service, and we successfully conducted our change of residence business starting with driver's license and finishing with vehicle registration and plates.  Things went so well we toured the Rapid City and Sturgis areas by mid week.  We finally selected a small campground just southwest of Rapid City by four miles.  It is still convenient to shopping in town, being nestled in the east foothills it has a great view of the Black Hills, and is close to all the sights up in the Black Hills.  On the downside, it is much colder up here, they had 2" of snow the day before we moved over and the nearby hills got 15" !

Below is our new backyard!  The Black Hills appear black from the dense pine trees.
Another angle of beauty...

The Rapid City and Black Hills area of South Dakota is a treasure trove of things to see and do.  We stopped by the Black Hills Visitors Center in Rapid City and realized that it would take many months if not years to see everything this area has to offer; Everyone we have met along the way sings the praises of this area and I guess I just didn't really believe it or at least thought that it wouldn't be as spectacular to me. However, I was wrong and do find this area to be truly amazing and we haven't hardly started our looking around.  We plan to be here for 45 days, but already know we will be coming back to see more.  And it is not just one thing here, it is the diversity and sheer number of things here that make this such a special area.

We visited the Geology and Paleontology Museum maintained by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.  From small beginnings they have built up a world class collection and exhibits.

One of the amazing facts of this Black Hills area is the dinosaur remains that are found here.  When the skull of the T-Rex below was found in the 1980's, it was one of only 7 known specimens in the worlds at that time.

The last tour for this week was that of the bronze presidents statues situated on the street corners of downtown Rapid City.  Each has a dedication plaque with brief information of the president and the generous donors.  It was a great history lesson for us.  We recognized several of the presidents, but there were many that we completely forgotten.

OK you probably already knew that it doesn't take much to entertain us... all day long!
One last president for my friend Mary M. who I know loves Airedale dogs.  I met Warren G. Harding 29th President on the corner of St. Joseph and 9th St with his dog Laddie.  I thought of you Mary when I saw Laddie!

When the weather improves later this week we plan to strike out for Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Mountain, Crystal Caves, and trout fishing in the lakes and streams in the Black Hills. We also have two projects lined up for Penelope; moving the tool chest out of the truck and onto the new cargo  tray we have on the back of Penelope and hook up the water pressure tank we have all set to go.  Lots to do...

Nebraska, Who Knew?

We left Manhattan, KS on Monday this week April 28 after staying the extra night to let the big thunderstorms pass to the east.  We rode about 170 miles into the 30-40 mph headwind into York, Nebraska.  The trip to York, NE produced poor fuel economy to say the least, less than 6 mpg!  The new equipment; hitch, wheels, air bags, performed just as specified and that was very nice for our confidence.  York, NE is very close to the southern border of Nebraska so most of our trip was through Kansas the first day.  We started to appreciate The Great Plains; it is field upon field upon field of endless grasses.

Welcome to Nebraska, the good life?  I am not so sure there is anything here...

We stopped at the trucker friendly Walmart in York... Then the rains came, again.  We ended up staying two nights at Walmart there.  We got our exercise in Walmart during the two days of 40 mph wind and rain (what else is new and different here?)  Our friend Chris P. was recently lamenting on the pitfalls associated with several available gyms back home, so we found a new solution on Aisle 32 at Walmart.

Finally we departed York and made our way to Lexington, NE situated along I-81.  Gari found a winery there that looked like a fun place to stop.  The family there, the MacFarlands, graciously allowed us to park overnight in their parking lot.  The mom & pop started the winery 10 years ago as a retirement hobby and it grew into a thriving business in the local area.  The two boys are running it now, one is the winemaker, the other the general manager.  We had a nice tasting session, finished with a bottle of white and a homemade Mac's Creek pizza.  It was a great stop.  Maybe there is the good life in Nebraska after all.  The wine was good and the grass grows incredibly lush, in fact everything was growing quite well...

We were up early Wednesday and had our sights set on Valentine, NE up by the northern border of Nebraska.  This was going to be a longer ride, closer to 200 miles and across the great sand hills of Nebraska.  This was a very interesting day.  We first stopped and toured W.F Cody's (Buffalo Bill) Scout's Rest Ranch in North Platte, NE.  It is an historic site preserved to the requirements of historic sites, which is quite meticulous.  Buffalo Bill was into just about everything, and we learned a lot about him as we self toured the ranch.  He thought of himself as the "old scout" and was quite the animal handler.  We knew Buffalo Bill for his stint with the Pony Express, hunting Buffalo, and his Wild West Show; what we did not know was that his show toured in Europe for a couple of years, he was a pioneer in animal breeding in the US West along with the first efforts in irrigation here.  He had a stake in mining as well.  I noticed that he was quite the dapper fellow in the many photographs around the ranch and most had him surrounded by women.  I bet he was a rascal!

On through the Sand Hills of Nebraska... who knew that these sand hills are the largest in the northern hemisphere?  We didn't even know Nebraska had sand dunes.  It turns out Nebraska is in a very unique geographic location, where six ecosystems converge and overlap.  These include the northern boreal forest, ponderosa pine forest, eastern deciduous forest, tallgrass prairie, mixed-grass prairie, and shortgrass prairie.  We expected vast dunes of bare sand as we rode toward the sand hills; the funny thing was that the sand hills were covered with lush prairie grasses with plenty of cattle grazing throughout.  The even more surprising thing was all of the ponds of water.  They were all over the place.  Apparently the water table is down only about 10 or 20 feet and as the sand hills roll, artesian wells spring up everywhere.  Anyway, this all comes together to make Nebraska sort of a paradise in our mind.  Everything, especially the grasses are so lush here.

What a fine day we had in Valentine, Nebraska!  Finally decent enough weather to get out and about and we were fortunate to visit some magnificent sites today.  Who knew Nebraska was known for waterfalls, had the incredible overlapping ecosystems and had the largest sand hills in the northern hemisphere all bubbling with fresh artesian wells?  Nebraska is a beautiful state and we look forward to a return visit.  I would like to try some fishing here.
